There is a real chance that the Chiefs will go 1-16 this year. Yes that means they lost the bye week. This means that in likelyhood the Chiefs will be picking 2nd in the draft. I say this because even if the Lions do win a game there is no way the Chiefs win the tie break because it is that kind of season. So with the Chiefs picking 2nd the real question is to pick or trade.
To answer this question we must look at what the team needs. I think we all will agree that Qb will be a sure need for next year with Brodie out for 12-18 months and the fact that even when healthy he can only stay on the field for no more than a quater before getting hurt. I have given up on the Brodie Croyle era in KC even though I never wanted a Croyle era. Huard will be gone. It is easy to see Herm doesn't like him and as much as I would like to see Herm gone I don't think Carl Hunt will pull the trigger. So that means We will go into next season with Quinn(and not the Brady version), Martin who has never played a game, and Thigpen. This one two things we will be drafting a QB and most likely bringing in a vet. I think Thigpen is for sure on the roster no matter what happens. He has looked ok the last few games and that alone will let him keep his third QB job and possibly the main man.
I have seen lots of mock drafts that us taking a QB with this second pick and I just dont see this as good move. It is hard to say who will come out of the combine as the number one QB but most think that Stafford will be the man and I don't like him for this team at this time. This team has lots of holes to fill and no one person will fix the problems here in KC. I think the Chiefs best option is to try and trade down a few spots so somewhere in the 6 to 12 range. This should get the team another first round pick maybe depending on what team trades but for sure another second and another pick or two in the latet rounds.
I think there are several very real and viable options once the trade down is made. The chiefs have a serious need for a MLB, OL, and another WR to put with Bowe. This year there are several very talented OL at the tackle spot that all could work here and then there is Malauga from USC and Laranitous from Ohio State. The last two options would be Crabtree to add another big dynmaic WR with Bowe. The dark horse is the backyard boy in Maclin. Maclin would give the Missouri fan base a name they love while giving the Chiefs that fast deep threat on returns that they had when Hall was in town but also give them another threat at WR.
No matter which player would be selected at the 6-12 spot the real draft comes with the next pick in my mind. I think the best QB in this draft will turn out to be Nate I go to Ball State Davis. I think Davis will be a late first round talent to a very early second round pick.
Then with the second round 2 pick the team can go for straight best player or need. Here picking up whatever they have not gotten in the last two picks.
This is bound to change by the time the draft gets here but for now this is what I think will help the Chiefs the most to be a winning team faster.
